There are such a vast array of diets. The fact is, many diets from paleo to vegetarian, keto to vegan, and many more, can work. Many people think finding the right diet or weight loss med is the solution.

Lasting Weight Loss

Why strict dieting doesn't work for long term weight loss:

1. They aren't sustainable

 I don't know about you, but as soon as I would think the words "I'm on a diet," I'd feel deprived and hungry. Diets are focused around what you can't have, and people often fall into a "on a diet, off a diet mentality."

Trying to "eat perfectly" and then frustrated and deprived, swinging to the other extreme.

2. A diet does not change your beliefs about yourself

When you identify as someone who is destined to be overweight because your whole family is, or someone who can't stick to a diet, or someone who is a "chocoholic," it's nearly impossible to lose the weight and keep it off.

Because of confirmation bias, your brain looks for evidence to back up your beliefs. And then self sabotage ruins all your best laid plans!

3. You use food as a coping tool

Emotional eating is an easy pattern to fall into. Maybe you snack more when you're bored, maybe you crave ice cream or chocolate when your sad, or perhaps a bottle of wine and pizza hits the spot after a stressful day at work! I've been there!

Food can help you feel better- temporarily. And you may have learned from a very early age to use food is a reward, a treat and a consolation.

4. You have unhealthy automatic habits

Your brain automates your behaviors to save time and energy. You don't have to stop to consciously figure out how to do everything everyday or ponder if you should do something. It becomes an automatic pattern.

That's how you end up unpacking grocery bags of BOGO ice cream and a bottle of wine when just that morning, you decided you weren't going to have that anymore!

And it's why you find yourself laying on the couch scrolling social media instead of exercising. It's a patterned behavior.

5. Your metabolism slows down

When you restrict calories, your body slows down your metabolic rate to conserve energy. Then, when you go off the diet and eat more, you can easily gain back even more weight then you lost, because your metabolism is slower and your body isn't burning calories efficiently.

Hormonal fluctuations from menopause or childbirth can also impact your metabolism, mood and energy level. Triple whammy!
